Botanical printing is a form of bundle dyeing where textiles are tightly bundled with plants and steamed; releasing naturally occurring tannins, pigments, and acids to create one-of-a-kind prints. In this introductory class, students will learn how different mordants influence the colors produced, as well as two techniques for creating crisp prints from local foliage. Students will print a silk scarf and a piece of wool felt using only leaves and flowers; no dyes needed! While our bundles steam, we will look at more examples and take questions before the un-bundling and the big reveal. Leaves and flowers that print reliably will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own foliage as well (not all leaves print, but a suggested list will be provided in advance).
Youth age 14+ welcome with registered or non-registered adult.
Youth under 14 welcome with registered adult.
What to bring: Students should wear an apron and/or clothes that can get dirty, and sneakers or sturdy sandals – no flip flops! Students should also bring rubber gloves, a pen and notepad, and a basket or shallow baking dish. Please also bring a bagged lunch and water to drink. All other tools and supplies will be provided.
Cancellation policy:
Please notify us via email at least two weeks prior to the class date if you will not be able to attend. You will be refunded the full registration, less a $30 cancellation fee. Cancellations received less than two weeks prior to the class date are not eligible for a refund.
